Study on falls prevention care for the elderly

Falls in the elderly must be considered as serious events because following, to fracture and bed ridden.Because so many factors may be associated with falls, we studied to define the relationship of these factors with falls in the elderly.The study were conducted in 13 hospitals between October 1988 and December 1989.We got the informations regarding to the patient falls from nurses in the hospitals.Data collected on the study patients included demographies, medical informations, ADLs,the time and place of falls.The other hand, characteristics of equilibrium function in the healthy elderly standing were investigated by body sway measurements.Subjects were 10 males and 14 females ranging in age between 59 and 80 years old.The body sway.was measured using a gravicoder(WAMI).The results were as follows:1) Falls accounted for 169 cases (48 males and 65 females in the number of the patients) 17 patients resulted in a fracture.2) Cerebro Vascular Skierose, dementia and impaired vision seemed to be factors that contributes to falls in the elderly.3) 63 % of all falls occurred during the following time 4-8,12-16 and 8-12. Also, about 40 % occurred within 2 months after the admission.4) Chance of behavior regard to discharge resulted often in a fall.5) The body sway using total shift length and area of the sway, was larger at condition in closed eyes than in open eyes and increased with increase of age.6) The body sway increased with increase of resonant frequency of platform.
