Quantitative changes of mineral elements (N, P, K, Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, Zn and Cu) in the fruitbodies and in the bedlogs of Lentinula edodes were investigated during normal and abnormal (pileus-less) fruitbody development. The contents of (w/w) these elements in young normal fruitbodies decreased gradually with the development. On abnormal fruitbodies, the content of Mn was higher than those in every developmental stages of normal fruitbodies, and the content of Ca was closed to that of young normal ones, whereas, the contents of other elements nearly equalled to those of pileus in normal fruitbodies just before rupture of a partial veil. The contents of Ca and Mn in bedlogs were more than 7 times, and N, P and K contents were less than 10% of those in normal mature fruitbodies. Amounts of most elements in bedlogs just under a fruitbody increased at early stages of development. Similar patterns of quantitative changes were found in area 4-10 cm apart from a fruiting spot in axial direction. These results suggest that elements in fruiting spot were accumulated from non-fruiting area of a bedlog during fruitbody development. No significant differences in the contents of elements were detected between the places just under an abnormal fruitbody and a normal one. Fruitbody yields were high in bedlogs and sawdust media fortified with N, P and K. However, increased absorption of these elements by this mushroom in the fortified substrates was negligible, compared with that in unfortified substrates. On the other hand, the contents of Ca and Mn in fruitbodies increased according to those of Ca and Mn in fortified substrate, which were higher than those of abnormal fruitbodies.
