インドネシアでは、1970年代から工業化が進み、さらに80年代に入ると製造業、鉱業・採石、商業などの部門を中心にかつて見られなっかた高い経済成長を示すようになった。このような動きにあわせて、農村と都市との間の人、物、資本あるいは情報の流れが急激に進むようになり、都市にあっては居住人口が増大するとともに、農村部にあっては農業生産と生活条件が著しい変容を示すようになってきた。そこで、本研究では、このような80年代の社会・経済的条件の急激な変化にともなって、インドネシアの政治・経済の中心をなすジャワ島では、農村社会と都市社会のそれぞれにどのような社会構造的な変化が生じてきたかを、1984年、1989〜90年および91年に現地調査で得た資料も活用して、明らかにしようとした。(1)農村社会の変動については、研究代表者の黒柳晴夫が担当した。ここでは、産業化や都市化にともなう農村社会の社会構造的な変動を、農村部への貨弊経済や経済合理的な生活様式の浸透という観点から考察を加えた。そして、従来広く見られた日本の無尽や頼母子にあたるアリサンに加えて、お互いにより合理的に金を融通しあう私的な庶民金融組織シンパン・ピンジャムが、相互扶助の一環として組織されるようになってきたことをあきらかにした。そして、その成果の一端が、90年10月末の日本社会学会で、口頭発表された。(2)都市社会については今野裕昭が分担した。ここでは、産業化にともなう都市化現象のひおとつにとして、家族が小家族化するという命題があるが、はたして発展途上国のひとつインドネシアではどうかを、ジャカルタ事例を取りあげて考察した。そして、ジャワではむしろ都市の家族に規模の大きな家族が多いことを明らかにし、途上国では都市化と小家族化は必ずしも相即しないことを明らかにした。
