In order to elucidate the effects of growth(GH) and thyroid(T4) hormones on renal development, We examined the kidneys of Snell pituitary dwarf mouse(dw) after the administration of these hormones, either single or in conbination, during the second 20days of postnatal life. Although the untreated dw mice showed reduced body and kidney weights, small depths of cortex and medulla, reduced diameter of glomeruli, and increased nimber of glomeruli on a unit area basis, these abnormalities were favorably improved by the hormonal treatment during the second 20 days of postnatal life. Histologically, the small renal tubular cells and small cells organized glomeruli obseved in the dw kidney were ameliorated to the levels of controls by the treatment. In this experiment, it was revealed that T4 is as effective as GH on renal development. In the case of the congenital primary hypothyroid mouse(hyt) kidney, the abnormalities found in the dw mouse were also present, but to a lesser extent. Therefore, these results sugest that GH is indispensable for renaldevelopment and the effect of T4 is considered to be complementary or synergistic. In order to elucidate the effects of growth hormone(GH) and thyroxine(T4) on renal development we biochemically and morphologically examined the renal tissue of dw mouse at different development. Differences in DNA RNA and insurin-like growth factor 1(IGF-1) content between the dwarf and normal control mice first became apparent on the 10th dat of age, and from this time that of dwarf mice showed no further increase in DNA and RNAcontent and decrease in IGF-1 content whereas that of the normal control mice continued to increase. These results indicated that GH and T4 may have effects on the renal development. Furthermore, it was apparent that deficienty of these hormone became to affect renal development from 10 day of age.
