藤井 宏は、脳認知系の情報符号化の機構について相関コーディング理論に基づく新しい仮説-動的細胞集成体仮説を提唱し、その生理学的・数理的な検証の必要性を提起した。その本質的な主張は、神経スパイクの時系列の1次統計(本質的に、スパイクの平均発火率)が情報のcarrierである、という古典的主張に対して、2次統計(本質的に、スパイク時系列間の発火タイミング-相互相関)が情報のcarricrであるとする。脳内ダイナミクスの力学系としての数学的枠組みの確立するための、基礎的考察を行った。辻 幹雄は、相対性理論におけるEinstein方程式の解の大域的理論の展開を動機として、Monge-Ampere方程式の解の特異性の構造を研究。方程式が退化していない場合に、或るクラスに対して解の特異性の構造の決定に成功した。細野雄三は、感染者と非感染者の2つの個体群に分類された集団の中で発生した伝染病の空間的な伝播の様相をモデル化したKermackとMcKendric反応拡散方程式系に対して、進行波解の存在と解の漸近挙動を明らかにした。辻井芳樹は、Mauldin-Williamsによるランダム・フラクタルを一般化した新しい定式化の下でランダム・フラクタル上の消滅問題を考察した。
