An Historical Study on Democracy and Development in Modern South Asia : Comparisons with East Asian Experiences

(1)本研究项目的目的是在南亚和东亚研究之间建立一个广泛的历史和跨学科视角的智力对话。这个项目的中心问题是关于政治和经济之间关系的理解，特别是民主和发展之间的关系。东亚社会已经理解了民主，主要是在初等和中等教育机会均等、企业地位平等和薪酬结构平等的背景下，以及努力将工人的需求和消费者的偏好与国家经济增长目标结合起来。南亚社会已经理解了民主，主要是在议会民主、言论自由和政治行动自由以及地方和区域利益的政治参与的背景下。(2)项目成员在印度办公室图书馆（大英图书馆）、公共记录办公室、LSE、SOAS、印度国家档案馆、尼赫鲁博物馆图书馆等收集资料。(3)除了在日本举办的几场研讨会和讲习班外，我们还在国外举办了两次会议：一次是2004年3月在波士顿的哈佛大学，Amartya Sen教授担任召集人之一；另一次是2005年3月在新德里的贾瓦哈拉尔·尼赫鲁大学。(4)在我们举行的两次会议的基础上，我们出版了，长崎信子（主编），南亚的民主与发展：东亚比较视角，京都：琉球大学，2005年。这代表了我们研究的主要发现，并传达了我们已经开发的总体观点。这本书将于2006年在印度再次出版。

(1)The purpose of this research project is to create an intellectual dialogue between South Asian and East Asian studies from a broad historical and inter-disciplinary perspective. The central issue of this project concerns the understanding of the relationship between politics and economics, especially the relationship between democracy and development. East Asian societies have understood democracy, primarily in the context of equal opportunity for primary and secondary education, equal status and egalitarian pay structure in the firm, and efforts to integrate worker demands and consumer preferences to the national goal of economic growth. South Asia societies have understood democracy, largely in the context of parliamentary democracy, freedom of speech and freedom of political action and political participation of local and regional interests.(2)Members of this project have collected materials at India Office Library (British Library), Public Records Office, LSE, SOAS, National Archives of India, Nehru Museum Library and so on.(3)In addition to several seminars and workshops in Japan, we held two conferences abroad : one at Harvard University in Boston in March 2004 with Professor Amartya Sen as one of the conveners, and the other at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi in March 2005.(4)On the basis of two conferences we held, we published, Nobuko Nagasaki (ed.), Democracy and Development in South Asia : East Asian Comparative Perspectives, Kyoto : Ryukoku University, 2005. This represents the main findings of our research and convey a sense of general perspective we have developed. This will be published again in 2006 in India.
