多くの樹種のアテ材のリグニン構造精査した結果、アテ材のタイプに関わらず、圧縮環境ではリグニン含有量が高く、芳香核構造S/V比が低く、β-O-4構造が少なく同構造の立体異性対比)(エリトロ/トレオ比)が低いこと、引張環境ではその全てが逆になることを、統一的な法則性として見出した。さらに多くの樹種についての分析の結果、S/V比を中心に記しえるこれら特徴は、植物進化がもたらしたリグニン構造の変化であることが強く示唆された。
