项目摘要

今年度実施したのは、当初の研究計画のうちの（ｂ）統治制度と「精神の強さ」との比較検討、（ｃ）「精神の強さ」を支える社会的諸要因の特定、に関わる研究である。（ｂ）の研究では、「精神の強さ」の成立構造を適切に理解するためには、ヒュームが情念について導入する二つの区別、すなわち「激しい／穏やか」と「強い／弱い」という区別について、再考する必要があると判明した。ヒュームは「精神の強さ」を「穏やかだが強い情念が、激しい情念よりも、意志を決定する要因として優位に立つこと」として特徴づける。しかしヒュームは、一般的に言えば激しい情念のほうが穏やかな情念よりも強く、わたしたちの意志を決定する、とも述べている。ではいかにして「精神の強さ」が成立できるのか、その説明には一見したところ困難がある。このような問題意識のもと研究を進めた結果、現在、この困難を解消する鍵となるのは、情念の持つ強さの時間的な安定性という要因の考慮である、という暫定的な結論を得られている。この研究の成果は、次年度に学会発表等で公表する予定である。（ｃ）の研究では次のことが明らかになった。すなわち、道徳性は、家族社会を越えて拡大した、見知らぬ人々との協働を必要とする自然的社会および政治的社会にあって、社会内での不都合を解消するための人為を通じて成立してくる。この成果は2022年10月2日に日本倫理学会第73回大会で発表され、現在はそれをもとに、学会誌に投稿する準備を進めている。これらの研究と前年度の研究を踏まえ、これまでの研究全体を通じた成果をまとめれば次のようになる。ヒュームによれば、「精神の強さ」としての道徳的自己制御は、一定以上の規模に拡大した社会にあって初めて人為的に生じてくるものであり、しかもそれは、理性や意志の力によるよりもむしろ、習慣によって安定化された判断と情念の傾向性に支えられることで実現する。
