スケールエラーとは，幼児が，サイズが明らかに適さない物体に対して，自分の身体または物体を無理やり当てはめようとする行動である。幼児期のスケールエラーは，物体認識およびその行為の選択についての統合が未熟な状態を反映している現象とされ，状況にそぐわない優位な反応を抑制することが難しいために生じるという(DeLoache et al., 2004)。本研究では，スケールエラーを示す幼児は，ミニチュア物体を見た時に，幼児自身が持つ (典型的なサイズの) 物体のイメージが強く惹起され，そのイメージを前頭前野において抑制できず，サイズに応じた行為を行えないために生じるという仮説を立て，この仮説を検証した。具体的には，モノに関わる際の子どもの心的イメージを調べるにあたり，イメージの誘発による行動変容を実験操作により検討し，さらには前頭前野における脳領域の活動を脳機能計測により検討した。研究1では，行動実験によってスケールエラー課題中に物体のイメージを想起させることでスケールエラーの生成が高まるのかを調べ，研究2では研究1の研究結果に基づき，脳機能計測手法を用いて，イメージを誘発させることで，イメージを誘発させないときに比べて，状況に適した反応をする際に活動するとされる前頭前野の活動が弱くなるのかを調べた。その結果，イメージ操作によりスケールエラーが誘発される可能性が示されたが，今後は刺激の選定などを詳細に行い，研究1および2の内容をさらに検討する。
