Skin reaction to ultraviolet light irradiation was examined using hairless dogs and rats. Erythema, sunburn and suntan reactions were observed as in humans. Histopathological examination for the skin revealed apoptotic cell death in the epidermal lesions. Involvement of p53 and p21 genes in the induction of apoptosis was suggested. Skin lesions were also induced by the application of an agricultural chemical, Maneb. The lesions were enhanced by ultraviolet irradiation in dogs, but not in rats. There may be a species differences in the skin reaction.Skin reaction to topical application of formaldehyde and hydrogen peroxide was clarified using hairless rats. Skin application of a mycotoxin, T-2 toxin, was additionally performed. The results indicated apoptotic cell death of epidermal cells and endothelial injury in the dermis. The results of the research clarified characteristics and pathogenesis of the skin injury induced by environmental chemicals and ultraviolet light.
