A Theoretical and Practical Study on Instructor's Heuristics in Teaching English as a Foreign Language at Kindergarten Level

This study reports on the findings from some observations of English language activities at kindergarten level in Japan. One of the researches, which the authors' have completed, was investigated over a period of three years. Part A of the Communicative Orientation of Language Teaching (COLT) Observation Scheme (Spada and Frohlich, 1995) was employed to describe the various aspects of classroom practice. The authors elucidate the changes in many aspects of the instructional practices, which appear to reflect shifts in instructional focuses as children grow and as they become accustomed to life at the kindergarten. In addition, in another research of the comparison among different classes, the authors show some factors of educational surroundings lead to disjuncture between learners' world and the target language.
