The objective of this research is to investigate how we measure individual travel behavior in urban space using mobile communication instruments. It describes how positioning technology that is built into a cellular phone system can be used to determine the location of a traveller at a given time. There are various system concepts of data collection for travel behavior. The characteristics of the systems are identified. A PHS based mobile communication device with a location positioning function was given to individuals participating in the travel and activity survey. The obtained positioning data through mobile instruments should be transferred to travel behavior data when we intend to use those data for transport planning and management in urban area. Then, the data transfer methods are described The data management scheme of travel data with positioning information can bb different from the conventional trip based data management scheme. The data management scheme suitable for mobile object is proposed. A pilot survey that developed a method of transferring an individual's location data to an activity diary was conducted in Osaka, Japan. It involved the participation of ten individuals for two weeks. The accuracy of the positioning, data was sufficient and the estimated travel behavior was consistent with the reported behavior, PHS supported systems will be useful for collecting various data in travel and activity surveys in the future.
