本研究の目的は、国境を越える移住・移動を経験する人たちのエスニシティの再構成に関する研究と、移動する多様な人々が共住する地域社会の再構築に関する研究を、国際共同研究として発展させるための可能性を検討し、実現するための条件を整えるところにあった。定期的な研究会とシンポジウムを8回開催した。海外から、李路路教授(中国:中国人民大学)、マニーマイ・トンユウ教授(タイ:コーンケーン大学)、イヴ・デロア教授(フランス:ローベル・シューマン大学)が参加した。李路路報告、マニマーイ報告、デロア報告がともに指摘した事実は、人々が就業のために国境を越えて移動する趨勢はもはや不可逆的ともいえるもので、特に、冷戦体制が崩壊した後は、一気に加速していることであった。人の移動が生み出している新たな格差や差別の問題、異質な人々が共に住む社会空間として再構築していく課題、あるいはリージョンという概念の必要性が具体的な事実から明らかにされた。また、現地調査を実施するために、調査地域を選定し研究テーマを絞り込むという本研究目的も検討することができた。以上の研究成果をふまえて、アジアにおける対照的な2つの地域の移動・移住とエスニシティの交錯、相互認知と対抗、トランスナショナルな移動が創り出す「リージョン」に関する実証的な研究を計画している。第1の地域は、中国と朝鮮半島とが接触する中国吉林省、青島、および韓国ソウルである。第2の地域は、タイと近隣諸国の国境地域(バンコクと周辺地区、ビエンチャン・ノンカイ地区)である。当地域は、地域社会が再構築されていくダイナミックな構造をみることができるフィールドでもある。移動・移住の具体的な事例をとおして、社会変動のダイナミックな構造をも考察する。
