人工組織社会研究の有力な手法としてエージェントベース・シミュレーションがある。海外においては、米国ではサンタフェ研究所でのSwarmというシミュレーションツールの開発と応用、ブライアン・アーサーによる人工市場研究、ミシガン大学のアクセルロッド、コーエン等によるCAR(Cohen, Axelrod, Riolo)プロジェクトによる社会と組織の分析、カーネギーメロン大学のCAS0S(Computational Analysis of Social and Organizational Systems)プロジェクトなどがある。一方、欧州では英国のサーレイ大学を中心としたSIMSOC(Simulating Society)のプロジェクトが活発に活動している。一方、日本においては、塩沢、喜多、出口、寺野、生天目、松井等が、これら欧米の多くのプロジュクトに対し、その比較的初期段階からさまざまな交流を行ないながら、独自に、U-Martプロジェクト(先物取引市場の実験システムの開発)、仮想経済ゲーミング(国民経済の実験システム開発)などの実験プロジェクトを立ち上げ、活発な研究活動を展開している。また、新井、加藤、兼田、木谷、中森等は、長年にわたりヒューマンエージェント・シミュレーションであるゲーミングシミュレーション研究を実施しつつ、人工社会・計算組織論グループと接触し、相互の研究成果を交換・共有しつつ、さかんに両者の融合を模索してきた。2003年8月に開催される34th Annual Conference of International Simulation And Gaming Association 2003において、Agent-based Simulation meets Gaming-Simulationという国際ワークショップを企画することができた。
