本研究は、最近急速に発展している社会科学分野、特に社会経済システムを対象とするマルチエージェント研究を基盤としつつ、社会科学の諸領域において生まれつつある、様々な新しい研究アプローチを体系化し、文理融合に基づく新しい総合的な研究領域としての「エージェント社会科学」を科学研究費の特定領域として申請することを目的とした。そこで、工学分野のみならず経済学を中心とする社会科学分野の研究者や学会を対象に、社会科学分野におけるマルチエージェントに関連したこれまでの取り組み、既存研究、今後の方向性を調査し、今後推進すべき課題を明確にするとともに、研究者および学会間の相互理解、情報交流を深め、ネットワーク作りを支援することによって特定領域研究を進める体制を確立した。既存研究や研究者の整理を踏まえ、関連すると考えられる学会として、人工知能学会やソフトウェア科学会、計測自動制御学会、情報処理学会等の計算機科学を中心とする工学系の学会に加え、日本シミュレーション&ゲーミング学会、経営情報学会、進化経済学会、社会・経済システム学会、理論経済学会、社会情報学会、組織学会等の社会科学系の関連学会および研究者との定期的な聞き取り調査を通じて、研究領域の設定および研究組織の枠組みを考え、最終的に特定領域として申請するための、計画班の設定および研究者の調整を行なった。このため、「エージェント社会学研究会」という名称で、広く参加者を募り、公開のシンポジウムも行なった。以上の調査研究から、特定領域研究の研究領域「エージェント社会科学」としての研究体制の確立を図り、最終的に研究申請を行うための書類を作成する準備が整った。
