Examination on Labor/Workers in Economic Development in Malaya/Malaysia

This KAKENHI research project analyzed and examined Workers in Economic Development in Malaya/Malaysia. This Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C) for 2003/04-2006/07 [15530193] succeeded the former Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B) for 2000/01-2002/03 [12572020]. During this project, the examination was done first with the materials and data obtained in the Malaysia and the United Kingdom during the former project. And, as the next stage, new field researches were conducted in Malaysia.The research discussed workers, labor forces and labor in Malaya/Malaysia with a focus on workers in the process of development of the developing country, with the actual discussion and figures. The discussion included not only the analysis of employment/labor structure, but also migrant workers, gender, workers rights/protection civil society, social protection system, and social safety net in Malaysia.The surveys were conducted with materials of research institutes (i.e. University Malaya, University Kebangsaan Malaysia and so on) and ministries. Moreover, the interviews with policy makers at ministries (Ministry of Human Resources, Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration Department, and so on), trade unions, NGOs and so on were carried out.The results of research project were published in academic journals and books and were presented at the international conferences and workshops as shown in the report.
