Regional Characteristics of Modern Architecture in Postwar Okinawa

本研究旨在通过对战后引入并在短时间内迅速遍及全岛的各种现代混凝土建筑的考察，阐明冲绳现代建筑在发展过程中的地域性特征。第一章[混凝土建筑及其规划方法的传播]阐述了1972年冲绳回归日本之前当地混凝土建筑设计形成的历史过程，并伴随着美国现代建筑建造方法的引入，为冲绳建筑建设的现状奠定了很大基础。第二章[混凝土住宅的发展]分析了住宅设计的发展过程，着重分析了住宅设计的发展过程，着重阐述了住宅的品质以及建筑师对气候条件、生活方式、建筑材料、气候条件等设计因素的思考。通过半个世纪的发展，说明混凝土住宅已经适应了气候条件和当地的生活需要。第三章[公共建筑的地域性]描述了由舒里博物馆和那霸市政厅的设计竞赛引发的冲绳现代建筑的地域性表达，在开发早期对当地建筑师产生了最大的影响。本章解释了前者有一个复杂的设计过程，以确定当时建筑师、地方当局和美国军政府之间争论的最终设计，而后者以新的理念赢得了冲绳现代主义设计的竞争。

It is intended in the study to clarify the regional characteristics of the Okinawan modern architecture in its development process through the investigation of various types of modern concrete building that were introduced after the war and has spread rapidly all over the islands in a short period.Chapter 1 [Spread of concrete building and its planning method] explains the historical process of the formation of local concrete building design before 1972, when Okinawa reverted to Japan, accompanied by the introduction of the US modern building construction method that contributed much to the foundation of the present Okinawan building construction situation. It is shown in the process that the standardization and the simplification of planning was widely promoted and the planning method showed the successful adaptation of the US method to the local conditions.Chapter 2 [Development of concrete housing] analyzes the development process of the housing design focused on the sectional details that explains clearly the quality of the houses and architects thoughts on design factors i.e.climatic condition, life style, building materials, building equipments etc. Through the half century development it is explained that the concrete housing has adapted to the climatic condition and the local living needs.Chapter3 [Regionalism of public architecture] describes the regional expression of the Okinawan modern architecture that was aroused by the design competition of the Shuri museum and the Naha municipal hall, that became most influential among local architects in the early stage of the development. It is explained in the chapter that the former has a complicated design process in order to determine the final design argued among the architect, the local authority and the US military government at the time, and the latter won the competition with new concept for the modernism design in Okinawa.
