国際鉱物学連合総会及び学会(IMA)は4年毎に行われる鉱物科学分野における、国際学会である。第17期日本学術会議鉱物学研究連絡委員会は誘致に努力をし.その結果1998年8月にカナダ,トロントで開かれた第17回の国際会議総会で、2006年日本での開催提案が受理された.2002年にエディンバラで開催されたIMA第18回総会で神戸開催が正式決定された.それに伴ってIMA2006-KOBE組織委員会組織して、具体的な企画の検討を行った。日本での開催は、1970年に京都会議(第10回)以来、36年ぶりの開催となる.第18期研連委員会では、日本鉱物学会,日本岩石鉱物鉱床学会,資源地質学会の3学会と連絡・協議し,組織委員会の立ち上げを行った.また各学会の評議員とその他の賛同者に呼び掛け、数回の会合を経て国際学会開催組織委員を立ち上げた.組織委員長(山中高光、本研究代表者)を始め各種委員会(事務局,企画委員会,財務委員会,現地会場委員会,プログラム委員会,巡検委員会)の委員長および委員を決定した。その後委員長、副委員長会合を開き、活動内容を討議した。国際会議代行業者を使用し、今後の国際会議の事業・運営に参画させることを決定した。数社からの見積もりを検討し(株)コングレに決定した。本企画研究申請の主目的は、組織委員会活動である。今年度は本研究分担者を中心とした2回の拡大組織委員会を開催した。そのため本科研費を旅費支給と会合費に用いた。また各委員会活動費に当てた。プログラム委員会では数回の会合を開催し、時宜を得たテーマの、シンポジウム,国際プログラム委員会の立ち上げも検討してきた。そのための会合費に使用した。また巡検委員会での巡検候補地を現地調査費に使用した。国際会議代行業者と協議し、広報活動として国際学会のhome pageを作成した。ロゴマーク、テーマのキャッチフレーズの公募を行った。
