国際鉱物学学会連合総会及び講演会(IMA)は4年毎に行われる鉱物科学分野における,国際学会であり、1998年8月にカナダ,トロントで開かれた第18回の国際会議総会で,2006年日本での開催提案が受理された。2002年9月に開催されたIMA(英国エディンバラ)のIMA第19回総会で神戸開催が正式に決定された。それに伴ってIMA2006-KOBE組織委員会を設立し、具体的な企画を検討を行って来た。本科学研究費補助金は2006年開催のための組織委員会活動に用いられた。なお日本における開催は,1970年に京都会議(第10回)以来,36年ぶりの開催となる。第18期研連委員会では,組織委員会の立ち上げを関係学会に依頼を行い、日本鉱物学会,日本岩石鉱物鉱床学会,資源地質学会の3学会と連絡・協議し,国際学会開催組織委員を立ち上げた。組織委員長として山中高光(本研究代表者)が選ばれた。平成18年7月23日〜28日に神戸国際会議場で開催することとなった。事務局,企画委員会,財務委員会,現地会場委員会(LOC),プログラム委員会,巡検委員会が発足した。その後各委員会の委員長、副委員長会合を開き、具体的なスケジュル、活動内容を討議した。国際会議代行業者(株 コングレ)、と契約し国際会議の事業・運営を行なうことを依頼した。本企画研究補助金は,組織委員会活動,プログラム委員会活動を具体的に委員会を開催して行うための会合費,宣伝活動としてのパンフレットの印刷費,巡検候補地の調査旅費などに利用した。1stサーキュラーと2ndサーキュラーを出した。また時宜を得たテーマのプレナリー講演者の決定をした。セッションプログラムとコンビーナーをプログラム委員会が決定をした。また広報活動としてにhome pageの作成をおこなった。国際会議の前後で行われる巡検地候補地の予備調査を行なった。
