地球環境問題の理学的側面を取り上げ、多岐にわたる各研究分野(ただし理学に限定)の最新の研究成果を明らかにし、研究分野間の相互理解を深め、新しい研究課題を発掘することをこの研究の目的とした.太陽活動、太陽地球系システム、地質時代の気候変動、氷床記録にみる気候変動、観察・観測時代の気候変化、生物圏・人類・人間それぞれへ影響の8項目を各分担者が担当した.これら各分担者はかって(第19期)日本学術会議第四部(理学)環境理学研連の委員であったので、このグループによる発表や討論は、すでに3年ほど前から行われていた.本研究ではそれを引き継ぎ、それを本研究の成果に加えることができた.本研究ではそれに加えて、他の分野・他の項目との関係を積極的に取り上げ、検討することに重点を置いた.本研究によって、気候変化の実態・原因の探求や生物・人類・人間への影響予測という理学的研究課題に関して、分野間の相互理解が深まり、今後どのような課題を取り上げ、研究を進めればよいかが明らかになった.またこれらの成果を社会に公表する計画を立案した.成果とりまとめに際しての項目の表題と担当する分担者()は以下の通りであった.太陽活動と地球(柴崎清登)、太陽地球系システムにおける気候変動(藤井良一)、長い時間から見た現在の気候環境の成立(増田富士雄)、氷に記録された過去の気候・環境を解読する(藤井理行)、文書記録と観測データから読みとる気候変動(三上岳彦)、地球温暖化と生物(東 正剛)、人類の進化と多様性(大塚柳太郎)、地球温暖化問題の考え方(野上道男).また社会への還元・普及を目的として、これらを内容とする出版を計画した.表題「環境理学--太陽から人まで」(仮題)古今書院刊行予定となっている.
