当初の役割分担に即して、研究代表者の吉原はバリのイスラム化に関する資料所在状況を、研究分担者の今野はバリのイスラム化の主動因を構成しているグローバル・ツーリズムに関する資料所在状況を、さらに研究分担者の永野はバリからジャワへの移住労働者(KIPEM)に関する資料所在状況を、国内外の関連データベースを参照しつつ、これに関連研究者へのヒヤリングをおこないながら、調査した。そしてその調査結果をファイリングし、メンバー間で共有した。そして予備調査の方法と枠組みについて協議した。予備調査は、(1)ウダヤナ大学図書館所蔵のバリコレクション、バリ州およびデンパサール市統計局、バリポスト社等での資料サーベイ、(2)カンポン・イスラムへのパイロット・リサーチ、を中心とするものであったが、同時に、現地研究者を交えて本格的な研究の方向と方法について論議し、そこに内在する論点の共有と相互理解につとめた.この予備調査によって、グローバル・ツーリズムを作用因とし、移住労働者を担い手とするイスラム化の進展状況があきらかになるとともに、メンバー間でそうした状況についての共通理解が得られた。そしてテーマをめぐる国際共同研究体制構築への道が開かれた。なおこの予備調査の成果は資料リストとして集成するとともに、『ヘスティアとクリオ』(コミュニティ・自治・歴史研究会)、『東北大学文学研究科年報』、『山形大学紀要』、『アジア遊学』等の雑誌においてモノグラフの形ですでに公表されている(一部近刊)。また関連学会および研究会で報告し、成果の普及につとめるとともに、今後の研究の方向についてさまざまな知見が得られた。
