アフリカにおける飢餓と貧困を根絶するには、伝統技術を継承しつつも外来技術を調和的に導入し、農業の生産性と収益性を持続可能な手法で高めていく必要がある。しかし、社会経済リスクや生態環境リスクが高いアフリカ諸国では、外来技術の導入による農業の集約化がこれらリスクに対する農民の脆弱性を高める可能性があることから、農民のリスク認識と管理戦略を踏まえた農業・農村振興策の再構築が求められている。本研究は、ナイジェリアを調査対象とし、聞き取り調査、アンケート調査、公的統計資料、生態環境計測で得られた質的・量的データを解析することによって、農民のリスク認識とリスク管理戦略を明らかにすることを目的とする。令和４年度において、新型コロナウイルスの感染拡大の影響によって、調査活動のキックオフが少し遅れたが、研究者代表者及び研究分担者はナイジェリアでの現地調査を実施することに成功し、ナイジェリア現地の大学研究者との調査連携関係を構築できた。現地調査の準備に当たって研究会を行い、ナイジェリアの農業開発において長年の調査経験をもつ研究者による情報収集、意見交換を行った。ナイジェリアの連邦農業大学アベオクタの研究者との調査連携によって、現地調査、遠隔調査を行うことができた。現地調査では、農業発展の動向、農業リスクと農外リスクについての最新情報を収集した。また、商業農業施設を見学し、農民に対して聞き取り調査を実施した。現地調査から得た情報に基づいて、まずはジェンダー、農民家計、リスクに関してのアンケートを設計し、現地チームによる遠隔調査は進んでいる。研究実績として、ナイジェリア農民が直面している最大のリスクの一つである気候変動について、学会発表、論文発表ができた。また、低地コメ栽培による土壌生産性改良についても、論文発表、国際学会の成果があった。
