McGurk効果により/da/と判断したCV音節の記憶様式について調べた。破裂子音の知覚過程については、これまで種々のモデルが提案されている。本研究では、音声コミュニケーション行動を獲得するのに視覚情報がどのような役割をするのかについて調べるために、読話情報を示す視覚刺激が音韻の弁別に与える影響と、破裂子音の聴覚的な短期記憶について調べた。その結果、次のような結果が得られた。(1)視覚と聴覚が同じ子音情報の場合(例、Abvb-Abvb-)でも異なる場合(Abvg-Abvg)でも2つの刺激が同じ場合はほぼ完全に「同じ」と判断された。(2)2つの刺激が聴覚的には同じ子音であっても、視覚的に異なる子音の場合には、2通りの結果が得られた。2つの刺激が共に同じ視覚刺激の場合(例、Abvg-Abvg)は、「同じ」とする率が高かったが、2つのうちのどちらかが視聴覚間で子音が一致した刺激である場合(例、Abvb-Abvg)には、弁別の成績は向上した。(3)(2)で特に片方がMcGurk効果による融合反応の生じるような刺激の場合には、視聴覚の一致した刺激が後置される場合(例、Abvg-Abvb)の方が弁別の成績が良いという「刺激提示順序効果」がみられた。(4)(3)でISIの長い方が刺激提示順序効果は増大傾向を示した。以上の結果を総合すると、視聴覚刺激の弁別の場合にも、聴覚刺激の弁別と同様に聴覚的な短期記憶が用いられていること、McGurk効果により融合反応を生じる刺激は、聴覚的に曖昧に聞こえる刺激の場合とよく似た結果を示し、これは聴覚的記憶が視覚刺激の影響を受けて変容し、被験者はカテゴリだけでなく、音色も変化したように聞いているためであること、等の知見が得られた。
