We investigated the present status of the relation between the social demand and university supply of information science/engineering education in Japan, with emphasis. of international comparison. To collect proper information we employed various methods, including questionnaires among industry specialists, university professors, symposia at academic society meetings, visit to universities active in education reform, document collection through governmental and university web sites, and official reports from education associations. The collected information ranges from governmental policy reports, to the individual reform efforts at classrooms. The following characteristic features should be taken serious:(1)The demand of information specialists is strong and moving fast. Information specialists of wider definition should be supplied quickly.(2)Good balance between education of fundamental knowledge and cutting edge information is necessary.(3)To activate the university classrooms, supporting systems which encourage the active teachers should be developed.(4)The reform investment is moving from the hardware infrastructure to that of information contents.(5)New systems to recognize good practice of education are implemented to encourage the reform actions.Based on these observations several suggestions on education policies are commented.
