(OBJECTIVE) The aim of the present project is to perform basic experiments of time domain signal multiplexing based on high speed bistable semiconductor lasers, in order to find out the feasibility of this approach for a futuristic high speed digital information system.(METHOD OF INVESTIGATION) To achieve the above mentioned objective, the following procedures were performed: (a)device assembly; (b) measurement and evaluation of the transient characteristics of bistable lasers; (c) two-channel optically triggered timedivision-multiplexing experiment, and (d) investigation of the instability of bistable semiconductor lasers, especially the chaos characteristics.(MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS) 1) Conditions for high speed switching of bistable semiconductor lasers are obtained.(2) A combination of bistable semiconductor lasers with planar photoconductive devices is demonstrated to be effective in achieving optically triggered TDM digital system, with good fan-out characteristics.(3) Two channel TDM experiment was performed successfully without cross talk.(4) Instability of bistable semiconductor laser includes self-sustained pulsation and chaos phenomena, deterministic random oscillation. Only under strong modulation condition, self-pulsating bistable semiconductor laser showed chaotic response, in qualitative accordance with computer simulation.
