Development of a software for language teaching materials using WWW and a study on the effects of the software

In 2004, the researchers made a proto-type software, first by compiling reading materials, reading comprehension questions, and vocabulary questions, and secondly by programming for provision of dictionary items and for keeping track of learner behaviors. The researchers built server systems using open-source resources such as Linux, Apache, PHP, PostgreSQL, and DBMS. We purchased an HTTP server, DB server, UPS, and other back-up systems. We also tested the proto-type and received feedback from the users.In 2005, we made some adjustments to the proto-type based on the feedback and the test results of the first experiment. We continue to seek ways to make this program available to the public. One possible way might be to add this program as a supplemental module to the MOODLE system. We also conducted a second experiment using the improved program.We would like to summarize the results of this project based on the data from questionnaires, interviews, and experiments, looking at them from three different angles : learners, teachers, and researchers. First, learners enjoyed reading with this program. The easy access to the dictionary made the reading process easy and enjoyable. Second, teachers welcomed such a program in which they can simply cut and paste any text and easily make reading materials. They are looking forward to using it when it becomes publicly available to them. Researchers can utilize this program not only for getting the data for incidental vocabulary learning but also for analyzing the reading processes of learners.
