景観の基調となっている地形環境を解読するための最も有力な資料は、地名と古地図である。全国で450万個ある小字地名は、地形生態の特徴を端的な言葉で表しており、人々の認識に基づいた環境指標である。一方、明治初期に作成された村絵図は、現在の地図に比べて、測量精度が低く見取図的ではあるが、はるかに絵画的で、伝統的な景観の特徴を象徴的に表している。そこで、本研究では、地域の歴史的な総合環境指標である小字地名と村絵図の特徴を、分類学的に解明した。福島県・茨城県・長野県・愛知県・滋賀県・奈良県を対象に、総計8万個の小字デ-タベ-スを構築し、小字語彙素の頻度分布を明らかにした。一方、茨城県の20市町村で、地形図をベ-スマップとした字界図を作成し、地形図で小字の表す環境を解読した。さらに、茨城県・長野県・神奈川県・滋賀県の10ケ所の大字を対象に、地域比較を行った。この結果、各種の小字語彙を分類してその使用率を比較し、地形語彙が一般的な地名の基調として用いられていることを確認した。そして、小字を環境情報として利用するための科学的な取り扱い方法をまとめた。地名により特徴づけられる地形形態は、山頂・方・尾根・先端・鞍部・縁・斜面・根元・テラス・谷・谷頭・谷口・分岐谷・凹地・曲がり・島・水辺・湿地・堤防・堀割の20のタイプに集約できることを、オリエンテ-リングで確立された技術を援用しながら示した。さらに、43種の地形地名の事例を取り上げ、その形態的特徴と意味について示し、地形保全の重要性を評価した。さらに、地名の語構成を概説するとともに、方位・垂直方向・流水方向・焦点方向・身体方向・形状方向・地形部位・内外距離・日照・地形区分の10の基準よって小字が命名され、その組み合わせによって村落内の位置関係が弁別されていることを示した。
