本研究では、地名をマクロな観点から定量的に把えるとともに、ミクロな観点から定性的に解明した。定量的な点では、茨城県北14ヶ町村の総数2万個の小字データベースを作成し、それを3百個の主要な地名語彙で検索し、地名の語源となる環境を分類し、その頻度を求めた。この結果、小字の半数以上が地形語彙を含んでおり、地形が地名として人々に認識される最も重要な環境であることが明らかになった。その他、眺望・水系・日照通風・地表材料・植生・城館・交通・農耕・生産・信仰・忌地・位置・規模・新旧の地名語彙から、人々に認識され命名されやすい土地環境についての知見が得られた。定性的な研究としては一つの大字内における小字の配置関係、主要な地形語彙の形態的な特徴を解明した。大字単位の事例としては、東海村亀下、山方村小貫、金砂郷村高柿、日立市会瀬、高萩市下手縄を対象とし、現地調査を行った。たとえば東海村亀下では、36個の小字のうち半数の18個が水にちなんだ名称が与えられていた。自然堤防上に立地する集落と、それをとり囲んだ堤防・水害防備林・河道・旧河道には、そこの土地利用にふさわしい小字名称が与えられており、集落空間が小字によって分節化して人々に促えられていた。小字が意味する地形形態としては、百種類もの事例について知見を得た。しかし、残念なことに、近年小字は若い人々にあまり使われなくなってきている。また、亀下では、耕地整理を機会に小字は36個から26個に整理され、歴史的な土地利用に対応した小字の区画割は、土地条件と何の関係もない画一的な区画割に改変された。区画整理・耕地整理を期に地形環境を端的に表現していた小字は、歴史的な意味を失い、単なる符号になりさがってしまったのである。一方、埼玉県吉見町にある県民ゴルフ場のように、小字をコース名に復活して利用されている例もあった。
