東アジア、太平洋地域に分布する56集団のデ-タを分析した結果、歯冠形質、頭骨形態の両面から、この地域における最も基層的集団はネグリト、ダヤクに代表される、いわゆるプロトマレ-と総称される集団ではないのかと考えられる。彼らの計測的、非計測的歯冠形態、頭骨形態のいずれもが中国大陸、日本列島、東南アジア、ミクロネシア、ポリネシア地域に分布する様々な集団と共通性を持ち、しかも、彼らを中心とする生物学的距離と地理的な分布距離もおおよそ一致する。この様な分析結果はたとえばポリネシア、ミクロネシア集団の縄文人との類似性、あるいは、東アジア大陸に分布する集団にみられるような南から北へ大きく変化するクラインを無理なく説明し得るものと考えられる。すなわち、東アジア、太平洋といった広大な地域に分布する集団は、比較的最近、せいぜい2〜3万年前後に、拡散を開始いていったのではないだろうか。遺伝子浮動と拡散地域に於ける環境への適応はそれぞれの地域でそれぞれの形態的特徴を形成させたことは容易に想像できるが、彼らの地理的分布と一致した形態の連続的変化を追跡してみると東南アジア、特に島嶼部に集約してくる。私の分析ではそのような集団こそプロトマレ-ではないだろうかと考えられる。しかし、このことは今のところ東アジア、太平洋地域に於ける集団の分化に関する作業仮説の一つでしかない。今期解明すべき問題は、このプロトマレ-という集団がどのような点で現在でも比較的古い形質を保持しているのかを明らかにする必要があるであろう。この問題へのアプロ-チとしてはまず、東南アジアの古人骨デ-タを分析する必要があろう。すなわち、縄文人、東南アジア大陸部のTam Pong,Tam Hang,Ban Na Di,Non Pa Kluay,Non Nok Tha,Ban Dang,Con Do Ngua等を含めた分析が急務であると思われる。
