謎の集団アイヌの特異性を明らかにし、それが現生人類集団の多様性の中でどのように捕らえられるのかを解明する目的で、世界主要81集団を比較対象として、アイヌ頭蓋の解剖学的小変異について分析を行った。総合的には、アイヌは新石器時代バイカル湖周辺集団、アムール川周辺集団といった北東アジア集団に最も類似する。しかし、北東アジア集団のみならず、東南アジアを含めたユーラシア大陸東縁に分布するいずれの集団とも異なった出現頻度を示す、アイヌに特異的な形質もいくつか存在する。このことは、少なくとも近世アイヌの成立において、北東アジア集団が何らかの関係を有していたことを示唆するが、必ずしもアイヌの北東アジア起源説を支持するものではない。アイヌの示す特徴的な形質について全世界の集団と比較すると、彼らが他の日本列島および周辺諸集団とは多かれ少なかれ異なった小進化の過程を有することが示唆される。しかし、近隣結合法による系統解析では、アイヌはアムール川流域の集団と新石器バイカル集団のクラスターに結合する。さらに、全世界の集団の分岐パターンは遺伝学によるものとほぼ一致しており、アイヌの北東アジア起源説を支持するかのようにみえる。また、東・北東アジア集団のクラスターが東南アジア集団よりも鉄器時代、および現代中央アジア集団に類似することも遺伝学的結果と矛盾するものではない。この結果はアイヌがある側面では北東アジア集団と類似した点を有すること、また、北東アジア集団が中央アジア集団と類似した点を有することを示しているが、彼らの系譜についてはさらなる検討が必要である。
