平成3年5月27日に第1回総括班会議を実施し、平成3年度の研究の進め方について研究打ち合わせを実施した。平成4年3月24日に第2回総括班会議を実施し、平成3年度の研究成果のとりまとめと平成4年度の研究の進め方について研究打ち合わせを実施した。総括班では平成3年度は3回の公開シンポジウムを開催した。第1回は平成3年5月27ー28日に「東洋と西洋ー新たなる統合を求めてー」を京都市にて実施した。第2回の公開シンポジウムは平成3年8月5日・6日・7日の3日間、北海道大学にて「文明と海ー日本海文明交流圏ー」を実施した。第3回は平成3年12月21日ー22日の2日間、京都市にて「謎の王国;勃海」を実施した。3回とも多数の参加者があり、特に第1回と第3回は全国から300名を越える参加者があり、本重点領域への一般の関心の高さがうかがわれた。またシンポジウムによって自然科学と人文科学の対話がはかられ、問題の所在が明白になったことも大きな成果であった。公開シンポジウムは講談社と角川書店より近く刊行の予定である。重点領域研究にかかわる研究者相互の交流と研究の推進を円滑にするために、ニュ-スレタ-「文明と環境」を1号から4号まで刊行した。平成3年5月・7月・12月、平成4年3月にそれぞれ刊行した。このニュ-スレタ-については、重点関係者以外からも問い合わせが殺到し、かつたいへん好評であった。ニュ-スレタ-の4号は平成3年度研究活動記録集として、研究成果の報告集とした。
