Reasons of the Heart. On the Nature, Rationality and Moral Function of Religious Emotions in Judaism, Christianity and Islam

The sequence of workshops to be held at Forschungskolleg Humanwissenschaften Bad Homburg between 2022 and 2024 aims at realizing three overall goals: First, it seeks to uncover and connect, both through principle and exemplary analyses, three core dimensions of the relationship between religion and emotion – the semantical, the epistemical and the ethical dimension. Secondly, it aims at exploring, if and to what extent the prior analyses might yield different results, if and whenever they are carried out in the context and from the perspective of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, respectively. Finally, a particularly pressing issue will be addressed: The implications of the prior findings for the possible success or failure of interreligious dialogue/s, at least among members of either Judaism, Christianity or Islam, will be specified and critically assessed – and this also, though not exclusively, from the perspective of the three Abrahamic religions.
