本年度は、片岡・辰己がシステムの実現のための基礎的な調査を中心に行なった。そのために、吉田がモンゴル語に関する知識・文献データを提供した。研究計画においては、この年度の研究主眼は、「X-Windowへのモンゴル語表示の仕組みと、ローマ字表記モンゴル語変換の仕組みの開発、およびシステムへの組み込み」であったが、実際には当初予想できなかった問題が生じ、ローマ字入力システムの実現までは至らなかった。これは、文字入力以前の段階である文字表示の検討段階において、種々の問題、とくにモンゴル文字固有の表記法が計算機上の文字表記に馴染まない点が明確にされたからである。そこで、モンゴル文字表示方法についての検討を再度行ない、ある程度の表示に関する結果を得た。特に、文字の表示方向や合字の表示についてある程度の法則性を見い出すとともに、その結果にしたがって表示系を構築することが出来た。この成果は、情報処理学会研究会で発表した。この段階で、モンゴル地域で用いられている他の文字の表示に関しても調査を行ない、文字表示を可能とした。なお、モンゴル文字アウトラインフォント作成のために、学生を用いてスキャニング作業を行なった。
