古地図は地域景観の復原や景観変化の研究に重要な資料となるが、その利用には古地図の文化財としての保存や所蔵者の都合など多くの制約があった。また、古地図の作成目的が多様であり、表現内容も近代的な地図とは異なり絵画的表現多く含まれ、位置情報に関しても近代的な意味では必ずしも正確ではなく、古地図に描かれた内容には様々な歪みが内包され、古地図から正確に地域景観を読み取ることには困難が多い。本研究は古地図および古地図に描かれた内容(景観要素)のデータベース化を進めるための問題点の摘出とその解決の方向を探り、古地図の研究的利用を促進するための望ましいシステムを構築しようとするものである。本年度は7年度における検討結果から、古地図画像そのものから景観要素の画像データを検索することは技術的に困難であることが明らかとなったので、景観要素は個々の古地図画像から切り取ってテキストデータを付してデータベース化し、検索することとした。試みに市販画像データベースソフトiSERVE2を使用して「萩藩一村限明細絵図(地下上申絵図)」を主たる対象にしてデータベースを試作した。また、昨年度特に問題とした画像を高解像度とすることに伴う問題点に関しては、とりあえずはJPEG形式で画像をセ-ブし、必要に応じて画像圧縮をしてデータのファイル容量を小さくすることとした。絵図中の注記などで判読できないものがある場合には、部分を写真撮影により別画像として全体画像にリンクさせることにより解決を図ることも実用面からやむを得ないとと判断された。このほか、古地図の地図的正確さに関して、国土基本図を基図として地下上申絵図を重ねあわせて萩藩の地下上申図の場合の歪みの傾向を把握した。
