本研究では、古地図に描かれた景観要素と文字データについて、古地図間で比較研究ができるようなデータベースシステムを構築することに重点を置くが、今年度は市販のデータベースソフトを活用してどの程度のデータベースが作成可能であるかをはじめとして以下の様な検討と結果を得た。(1)対象とする古地図を近世の村絵図に限定して研究を進めることにし、既存資料から村絵図における表現内容の一般的特色を把握し、村絵図の書誌情報と記載内容のデータベースの内容を暫定的に決めた。(2)村絵図の実物を写真撮影し、フィルムスキャナにより画像データとして入力した。(3)画像処理用ソフトにより取り込んだ村絵図からどの程度の情報を読みとることができるかについて検討した。ここでは、紙焼きした写真と比較して画像処理によってどの程度紙焼きの写真よりも多くの情報を得ることができるかを具体的に明らかにし、本方法の有効性と問題点を検討した。その結果、特に解像度との関係で撮影フィルムは高感度のものは避けるべきであること、データファイル容量をできるだけおさえるには解像度を低くする必要があるが、その場合絵図中の小さな文字が判読困難になるというジレンマをかかえることが明らかになり、この点が今後の大きな課題となった。(4)写真画像からトレース図を作成する際の問題点の検討を行った。(5)画像データベースソフトを利用し(1)で暫定的に決定した内容を、入力済み村絵図についてデータを入力し、データベースの試作をした。このような今年度の研究の結果、村絵図の画像を含めたデータベース化は、画像処理により分割写真の接合にも大きな問題はなく、ある程度熟覧にかえることができ、絵図の保存の観点からも有効であり、通絵図的な研究にも利点が大きいことが明らかとなった。
