9世紀から15世紀にかけて栄えたアンコール王朝が残したアンコール遺跡は,仏教寺院,ヒンドゥー教寺院,墳墓寺院や貯水池,橋,宮殿,基幹道路など,大小さまざまな遺構からなる都城遺跡である。カンボジアのシェムリアップ市郊外の密林には,アンコール・ワットをはじめとする主要な遺跡が集中している。密林の中に点在しているこれらの遺構は大きく3時期に分類されているが、その全容についてはいまだ多くの謎がある。遺跡相互の位置関係が明確でないだけでなく,3次にわたって構築された都城の造営尺,方位などは、密林に阻まれて未解明のままである。本研究の目的は,地理情報システムを用いて,アンコール遺跡の遺構のデータベースを作成し,密林で隔てられた遺跡同士の位置関係の把握や,方位や造営尺などの解明と,遺跡の全体像の把握と復原を試みることにある。縮尺1/5000のベースマップの完成が遅れたことから、研究の遂行にもやや遅れが生じたが、この精密な地図の検討により、アンコール遺跡には建造物以外に土塁状の遺構が多数残っていることが判明した。一部は潅漑用の土塁と考えられるが、大半はアンコールの都城と同一の方法を示し、都市遺跡の遺構と考えられる。これらの遺構を含め、遺跡の配置の相互関係、個々の遺跡の方位とその時期差の解明を試みた。また、都城の一辺や寺院の伽藍の中心線の距離を検討し、造営尺の算出を試みた。現在、造営尺、方位基準線をもとにアンコール遺跡復原を試みている。
