1997年度重点領域「人文コンピュータ」に採用され、メナ-ル版パスカル全集を底本とし、パスカル自身が書いた(あるいは書いたと推定されている)部分の第2巻と第3巻を電子テキスト化し、テキストデータベース管理システムSIGMAで言語解析等を行っている。SIGMAを用いた種々の言語解析により貴重なデータか得られつつある。1998年度中、国内的にも、海外でも類を見ないパスカル及びその周辺の全作品のデータベースを構築予定で、SIGMAによる数量化調査・言語解析をし、パスカルの思想にさらに迫ろうと考えている。そして、新たな研究分野の開発も試みたい。同時に出てくるかも知れない技術的問題は、SIGMAの改良・改善も促すと思われる。今まで手作業では不可能であった部分の、諸問題が発見でき、研究上の可能性も広がっている。この貴重なデータおよび解析結果はフランス文学研究者に供したい。距離、時間上の問題かつ研究のオリジナリティという点からも、日本独自のデータベースのみを使用して日本人研究者が成果をあげることは大切で、必要かつ基礎的な整備であると考える。
