対象言語が話されているクック諸島ペンリン環礁で,当初の計画よりも幾分長く,約6週間にわたる現地調査をおこなうことができた。本年度の現地調査許可を昨年のうちに発行してくれたクック諸島政府学術調査委員会の好意と,現地の人々の協力によるところがおおきい。同環礁への飛行便は週1便しかないため,同環礁での実質的現地調査の前後に,首都のあるラロトンガ島で,滞在許可取得と調査実施手続き(調査開始報告・調査終了報告・ペンリン環礁村長への入域通報)および飛行便待ちのために,1週間ないし10日間を費やさざるを得ないのが通例である。主たるインフォーマントは,初年度(2000年度)から協力してくれていた男女各1人と昨年度から継続している女性1人の計3人にひきつづきお願いすることができた。3人とも65歳以上のペンリン語の母語話者で,ペンリン環礁の生活誌に通じ,水準以上の英語能力をもつ人たちである。これらの人たちを通じて,他の島民たちからも広く補足的情報を得ることができた。成果は,序論14ページ+本文271ページ(B5判,総285ページ,各ページ42行,左右2段組み)の"Penryhn-English Dictionary"(「ペンリン語・英語辞典」)にまとめた。収録語彙5000語規模の帰納的辞書を作るという本研究の目標はほぼ達成することができたと思う。ペンリン環礁に関する研究は,文化人類学および考古学の分野では従来から散発的に行なわれてきた。しかし,同環礁の言語に関する研究は,1960年代にハワイ大学のアヤコ・ヤスダが行なった統語法の記述(修士論文)が唯一のものだった。本研究の成果である辞典の完成によって,ペンリン語は文法と辞書の最小限の記述がととのったことになる。

However, research related to the speech of dogs is the only one that has been done in the 1960s in the University of Hawaii. The results of this study include the completion of a dictionary, the selection of grammar, and the minimum description of a dictionary.
