ギリシアの自然哲学の伝統においては、世界や宇宙の根源的な原理とされた水や空気などの基本物体は、同時に生命の原理(アルケー)としての魂(プシューケー)ともみなされていた。つまり、その段階では物体と魂の概念は、未分化であり截然とは区別されていなかった。これに対して、近代自然科学を導くすぐれたモデルとなる古代原子論は、不可分割な剛体(アトム)という明晰な「物体」概念と「空虚」の概念を、宇宙万有を構成する究極の二つの原理として据えて、合理的な世界像を見事に構築した。古代原子論は、アルケーを同時にプシューケーともみなすギリシアの自然哲学の伝統的考え方を根本的に否定して、生命をもたない微細な剛体の物体を原理として、生命現象をその微細物体どうしの一定の結合によって説明したのである。生命もまた感覚的諸性質と同様に、アトムが生み出す二次的な性質や現象にすぎない。プシューケーはもはやアルケーではない。プラトンは、原子論者によってプシューケーを排除した物体概念がアルケーとして主張された思想的問題情況をふまえたうえで、逆に物体をまったく含むことのない「魂」を、宇宙万有の原理として明確に提示したのである。それゆえ、物体を含まないプシューケーが今度はいかに身体や物体と関わりをもつかという問題は、プラトンによって当初から重要な思想的課題として意識されている。プラトンは、新しいプシューケー概念が、自然や万有をかえってよりよく説明できると考え、反二元論的な世界像を構想し発展させていたことを検証し跡づけを試みた。特に『ティマイオス』における知覚理論と心身問題を考察することによって、プラトンの魂観が、きわめて整合的に考えられており、素朴な心身二元論ではないことが論証できたと考える。また、プラトンの生命像が、後代のヘレニズム期にどのような影響を与えたかを、プルタルコスの医学思想における心身論に着目し、プラトンの『ティマイオス』における心身観や『国家』等における医学思想が継承されていることを明らかにした。
