まず『ギリシア哲学者伝』第十巻のエピクロスの書簡と、ルクレティウスの『事物の本姓について』をコンピューターで検索しアトムを表わせる用語の調査を行った。前者において不可分割の原子を示すにはギリシア語のatomaという用語が45回使われるのに対し、後者では対応するラテン語のindividuumという語は一度も使用されてない。後者でアトムを指すために用いられる各語の使用頻度は、物体を一般的にさすcorpora(558)が群を抜くが、semina(114),primordia(72),principia(85),materies(78),genitalia(15),figura(58)と多様である。特に種子を意味するseminaは、エピクロスは4回であることと比べると多い。このseminaという語によってルクレティウスは、エピクロスが述べていない世界における生命の発生、成長、季節的循環の明確な説明を試みていることが分かる。ある種子は決まった種類のアトムによって構成されることによって、一定の種子から一定の動植物が季節の循環に応じて発生する。ギリシアの宇宙論に古くからある「種子概念」を原理論に導入することによって、アトムのもつランダムで機械的な運動から、どうして生物のような有機的な組織化と結合がなされるのかという原子論への批判を反駁したのだ。そして彼は、熱と風(空気)と第3の名のない微細なアトムがどのようにして魂を構成するかというエピクロスが明確にしていない点を、名のない微細なアトムが他のアトムに運動を与え、いわば「魂の魂」(III.275)となると説明する。そこにはアトムが形、大きさ、重さ以外に性質を持たないとした根本規定の逸脱と、原子論が否定したはずの「生気論」の密輸入がうかがわれる。これは運動を物体の接触によって起こされる運動だけしか認めず、プラトンの非物体的な魂の運動という概念を受け入れることができない原子論の根本的な瑕疵であることが本研究によって明らかになった。

The tenth chapter of the book "Philosophy" is about the investigation of the terminology of the book "The original name of the thing".
