本研究は、科学博物館がモノをとおして科学技術に関する情報を蓄積・伝承する機能に着目し、日米両国立科学博物館にて「技術革新」として展示されるモノの実地調査をとおして、「技術革新」の持つ意味を再検討しようとするものである(すなわち本研究は、技術革新の「展示方法」を探究するものではない)。1995年、ワシントンD.C.のスミソニアン協会、国立アメリカ歴史博物館内に創設されたレメルソン発明および革新研究センターは、レメルソン財団の寄付により、これまで「発明および革新」をめぐって種々の活動を行ってきている。しかしながら、その詳細はわが国ではほとんど知られていないため、18年度に続き19年度も、同センターに関する資料収集およびインタビューを実施した。同センターは、発明や革新が合衆国の歴史においていかに重要な役割を果たしてきたのかを人々、とりわけ若者に理解させようと努めてきている。年に数回催される会議やシンポジウムは、技術革新のテーマが多様に設定されており、「発明および革新に関する新たなパースペクティブ」を提示しようとするセンター関係者の問題意識を色濃く反映する。19年度は、同センターが2005年に開催した会議の報告書Cultures of Innovation (2006)を翻訳・刊行した(『革新の諸文化』2007)。また、同書の中の、技術史の研究対象として何をユニットとすべきかという論点について、「日本の技術革新」第3回国際シンポジウム、技術革新の様々な捉え方に関するパネル討議にて、バーナード・カールソン、フィリップ・スクラントンらとともに議論した。レメルソン発明および革新研究センターによる情報の蓄積・発信、特に普及の方法は、わが国の国立科学博物館が日本の技術革新に関する知見をいかに国民に普及すべきかという点で示唆に富む。同センターの取組みは、サイエンス・コミュニケーションの観点から、さらに検討していく必要があると考える。
