本研究は、人びとを新たな形で差異化する今日の遺伝概念を軸に、人の自己把握の問題と社会との関わりについて検討するものである。初年度は今後の調査を見据えた上で土台の理論固めに力点をおき重要概念を整理し、一次資料の収集と歴史の批判的検討作業を進めた。前者については、遺伝の知を中心に今日の社会で重要性を増している諸概念、具体的には、遺伝的な多様性や遺伝言説の社会化、医療の生物学化・遺伝学化などを主題化し、国内学会にて口頭発表を行った。多様性の概念は、生物多様性にはじまり、本邦でも用語としては定着して既に久しいが、近年ではその使用の拡大が著しく、性の多様性や神経学的な多様性など、様々な観念と結合して社会的に異議申立てがされてきた。しかし遺伝的多様性については、今日ではまだ一般に開かれ拡散浸透するというよりも、臨床で医療者から患者や家族等に対して語られたり、遺伝性疾患や病理的な変異に悩む当事者らの集まる場で新たな「専門家」らによって語られる用語となっている。20世紀からの科学が解明した遺伝的な諸個人の記号的生物学的な識別法は本来、差異の体系そのものに根付いている。しかし表現型での意味解釈はときに決定的な作用をもたらす。カウンセラー等の新たなアクターを迎合した専門家は多様性という用語によって不平等の緩和を目指すが、当事者にとっては多様な差異の絶対性こそが強調される形で響き、結局のところは排除の図式を強めている側面があることが見えてきた。また、集合を捉える視点では、遺伝を軸とした課題は人類を通して共通する普遍性と、人種やエスニシティといった概念とともに、かえってその差異を浮かばせていく個別性との両義性を孕む。この特徴は政治社会的な文脈とも深い関わりを持つことから、現代における遺伝の本質を掴むためには、改めて歴史の批判的な再検討が不可欠であると考えられた。
