Development of guidelines for the genetic conservation of endangered Mahogany species in the Amazon rainforest

This research project aims to elucidate the genetic diversity of the main populations of the most important commercial species of the mahogany family in the Peruvian Amazon, the big-leafed mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) and cedro (Cedrela odorata L.), and to consider practical ex situ conservation techniques for resources necessary to develop effective management programs, and develop guidelines for genetic conservation of mahogany species.Research achievements in the first year are as follows.(1) In order to carry out this research project, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on scientific and technological cooperation was signed with the Peruvian Amazon Research Institute (IIAP-Peru) and with the National Amazonian University of Madre de Dios (UNAMAD-Peru).(2) Field surveys and research meetings with overseas joint researchers were conducted to explore evaluation sites and target individuals and populations of mahogany species.
