本研究課題は自然災害に関する研究を強力にかつ計画的に推進させ、得られた成果を社会へ還元することを目的として組織されたものであり、目的達成のためにいくつかの会議と委員会を設けている。まず研究連絡会議を3回開催し、研究促進のための諸方策を審議決定し、その実現に必要な作業を重ねた。60年度は、国内外とも自然災害が多発した年で、海外にチリ地震、メキシコ地震、コロンビア噴火等を含めて、4件の突発災害調査団を派遣し、国内でも長野市の地滑りを始め4件の調査を行い、多くの成果を収めた。研究体制委員会では、昨年度までの検討結果をふまえ、自然災害事象についての観測体制の現状と問題点の検討を行ない、また7日に出された学術審議会の建議に基いて、昭和62年度から体制を一新してスタートする重点領域研究について、検討を重ねた。欧文論文集編集委員会も4回開き、応募のあった多くの研究論文のうち優れた研究10編を選定して2冊の論文集を刊行した。6つの地区部会はそれぞれ年数回ずつ地区部会を開催し、研究者相互の研究連絡を行うとともに、地区ごとに特色のある自然災害事象につき研究討議を行い、また専門部会と専門分科会においては専門分野から見た、自然災害の研究課題等を検討した。研究者による研究発表と討論の場としての総合シンポジウムを新潟大学において約500名の参加の下に開催し、計画研究と突発災害調査の成果の他、衛星写真の自然災害研究への応用に関するワークショップがあり、討論を行った。昭和59年3月に終了した5種類の計画研究の研究成果を各課題ごとに印刷刊行し、全国の各大学や官庁の関係部局に配布したが、これらは災害原因の究明や防災対策集に資するも のと期待される。一方、昭和58年度のこの特別研究で行われた研究成果報告と56〜57年度関係の発表論文集録を印刷し、同様に資料とした。

This research topic focuses on the promotion of natural disaster related research, the achievement of social disaster related research, the organization of disaster related research, and the establishment of disaster related research. In March 1959, the research results of the five kinds of projects were published in print, distributed by the departments of university relations nationwide, and expected to be collected in order to investigate the causes of disasters and disaster prevention strategies. A report on the results of special research conducted in 1958 and a collection of papers on the relationship between 1956 and 1957 were published.
