狭義の"ウマネジモ"は、ルネサンス期における古典研究すなわちstudia humanitatisの勃興を意味する言葉であるが、今回の研究においてはウマネジモに特徴的な原典批判の方法論及びこれと不即不離の関係にある懐疑精神、そして実証主義精神までをウマネジモの伝統として把えたうえ、まづその確立の第一歩を中世末期の、また成熱の諸相を15世紀のイタリアに求め、更に16世紀の後半、イタリアが反宗教改革期に突入した後こうした伝統が舞台をフランスに移して継承され、発展していった過程を文学との関係において追跡、調査したものであり、具体的な成果は以下の通りである。1. ペトラルカのリウィウス研究にはじまったとされるイタリアのウマネジモであるが、これに光ズコダンテの「俗語討論」を詳細に分析することにより、彼の言語認識が既にその歴史性ゆえにスコラ学の伝統を克服し、ウマネジモへの一歩を踏みだしたものであったことを明らかにした。2. 15世紀のイタリアを中心とする西欧世界におけるウマネジモ浸透の度を測るための資料としてヴェスパシアーノ・ダ・ビスティッチの「人物伝」を調査し、彼の残した各顧客に関する記述から各々の蔵書目録の再構成を試みると同時にその傾向を分析した。3. ラブレー等に代表される初期フランス・ルネサンスの文学がイタリア文化の直接的な影響の下に生まれたことを確認すると共に、フランス・ユマニスムの頂点とされるモンテーニュの「エセー」の中に近代的懐疑精神の確立と跡づけた。4. 通常、"近代"として位置づけられる啓蒙主義が、その出発点においてモンテーニュ以後のフランス・ユマニスムの成果を基礎とした要素を含有していたことをディドロの思想に新しい光をあてる可能性として追求した。
