近年の地方都市圏の戸建住宅建設では、いわゆる公私室型系列の平面とは異質な〈続き間型〉系列の平面が多くみられる。伝統的平面との関連では町家系列と農家系列の2種類の続き間型平面がみられるが、今回の研究では前者に焦点をあて、金沢市内で約50戸を抽出(幕末から昭和50年頃までの建築)し、平面と座敷回り意匠の変容過程の分析を行い以下の結果を得た。1)平面形式の変容:町家の平面形式の発展は平家型(【I】型),中二階・二階一室型(【II】型),中二階・吹抜残存型(【III】型),中二階・二階全居室型(【IV】型),本二階二階全居室型(【V】型)にタイプ化できる。伝統的町家は【I】型に集中していたが、まず明治中期にアマの一部に座敷をとる【II】型が現われ、大正期になるとアマが全て無くなり吹抜けだけ残る【III】型、アマも吹抜も無くなるが本二階には軒高の足りない【IV】型が出現している。昭和初期になり本二階が現われ、金沢の町家の二階発達は最終段階に達している。戦後の変化はトオリニワ部分の床上化に集約される。昭和30年代には台所の床上化、40年代には玄関土間以外は完全に床上化する。40年代後半になると、二階にあった座敷が一階に移り、二階が個室化する。一階に移った奥座敷は中の間との続き間化が散見されるようになる。2)座敷構成の変容:座敷飾りの変容に注目し編年を行った。床の間・床脇・書院の三つ揃っているもの、二つ揃っているもの、一つだけのものを夫々A,B,Cと名づけると、江戸末期では上層町家座敷は10帖の広さでAであるのに対し、一列型町家はAは少なかった。大正に入ると一列型町家でもAになる。昭和になるとAでは二重回り縁をもつ天井がつくられた。昭和初期にはBのものに長押が普及し、座敷飾りの大衆化がすすんだ。戦後は30年前後のAでは長押、二重回り縁が用いられた。45年以降は二階座敷の一階への再移動がすすみ、白木柱、目透かし天井が現われ、意匠の多様化が現われた。
