国民住宅像の転換期にあって、現代日本人の中に根強く潜在している木造戸建住宅を理想とする意識像の形成の社会的文化的背景を明らかにすることを研究目的とし、平均住宅規模が全国一である富山県の礪波平野部農家を対象に、(1)木造戸建住宅の平面・意匠の伝統の継承性、(2)木造戸建住宅居住者の住居観・住宅像に関する調査研究を行った。(1)については、礪波平野中心部の上層農家33戸の明治以降の住宅改良過程の調査と礪波平野一帯の新築農家平面を293戸採取し、平面分析を実施した。前者の調査では、農家一戸当り平均4〜回、6〜7ヶ所の増改築を明治以降行っており、その過程で間断なく規模を拡大し、今日では明治当初の平均規模の5倍に及ぶ107坪の延面積に達していることを明らかにした。戦前の増改築は、ヒカユマの増築や土間の床上化が中心であったが戦後、とくに昭和30年代以降は農家の経済力の上昇と平行し、ハレ空間の充実に力を入れ、住宅の格式性の強化が顕著になっている点を明らかにした。後者の新築平面の分析は、増改築と新築のケ-スに分けて分析した。増改築では、平面や外観の伝統の継承意識が強く、内部はハレ部分より日常空間の改善に力点をおいているのに対し、新築の場合はハレ空間を日常空間から明瞭に分離するとともに外観を入母屋御殿造り風にするなど、格式性を強めている傾向を明らかにした。(2)については、礪波平野内農家主婦層273戸を対象に生活観、住居観、住宅選好のアンケ-ト調査を行い、以下の知見を得た。1)現住宅にみられる伝統継承性は、伝統的大工現識の残存と深く関係している。2)住宅の価値観については和風志向の観念が強いが、新しい設備を求める合理志向も部分的には認められる。3)若い年代を中心に集合住宅を許諾する価値観の芽生えも認められる。研究全体のまとめとして、木造戸建住宅の様式的伝統は希薄化する一方、経済力の上昇とともに新たな格式性付与の題在化を指摘できる。
