基礎史料の調査・収集・整理;基礎的視点の確立;および高分子論争,高分子説受容過程,高分子学派の分析作業を行った。1.刊行文献,二次史料を入手すると共に、ドイツ,アメリカにおける史料の所在状況を詳しく調査し、必要な一次史料(公文書,高分子学者の書簡,メモなど)の収集に努めた。西ドイツではドイツ博物館(ミュンヘン)のシュタウディンガー文書,米国では化学史センター(フィラデルフィア)のフローリー文書およびハグリー図書館(ヴィルミントン)のカローザース文書の調査を行った。これらの調査は当初予定していた手紙による問い合せ・依頼郵送という形では限界があることが分ったため、直接現地に赴き調査・史料複写を行った。また、海外・国内の存命化学者または家族の所在を調査し、面談または手紙によるアンケートを行い基礎データの収集を進めた。化学史センターとアメリカ化学会で既に実施したインタヴュー(ビデオまたは録音のテープ)も合せて入手した。2.内外の関連分野の研究者と意見・情報を交換し、基礎的視点の確立に努めた。3.収集・整理した史料をベースに、独・米・日における高分子論争,高分子説受容過程を比較分析した。その結果、1920年代中葉ドイツに始まった論争は、20年代末にアメリカに一部飛び火したが、日本ではほとんど発生しなかったこと、同学説の受容過程(30年代)には理論的要因だけでなく、学派や師弟関係(独、日)、工業的応用の成功(米)など外的要因が大きな役割を果したことが明らかになった。今後は専門学問としての高分子化学の成立を促した制度的・工業的要因の調査を更に進め、全体的総括を行う予定である。なお、事情により、以後の研究は科研費で行うことを断念せざるを得なくなったので、追記しておく。
