広範な微生物が示す多様な機能を総合的に解析することを通じて, 生物そのものの統一的な認識に有意義な知見をもたらすとともに, それら成果を基盤として新しい視点に立った工業的な物質生産体系を確立するための研究を基礎的かつ体系的に推進することを目的とした重点領域研究・微生物の新しい機能開発のための基盤研究の総括を行った. すなわち, 総務, 企画, 連絡, 調整, 研究成果評価等について, 総括班会議, 班長会議, 班会議, 公開シンポジウム, 成果報告会を企画, 開催し, 本重点領域研究の研究推進のための活動を行った.総括班会議は昭和62年6月4日, 9月12日, 昭和63年1月29日に行い, それぞれ, 研究推進の方策について検討した. 班長会議は昭和62年6月4日, 班会議は昭和62年9月12日にそれぞれ行った.公開シンポジウムは農協ビル国債会議(東京)において開催し, 各班から1名ずつの演者6名の講演があった. 研究班員及びその関係者約70名, 一般参加者約80名計約150名の参加者を得, 充実した講演と熱心な討論が行われ, 各分担研究者の研究の今後の遂行に貢献するとともに, 本重点領域研究の内外への広報に寄与した(昭和62年9月11日)成果報告会は京大会館(京都)で計画及び公募研究分担者の参加により, 各班から1〜2名ずつの演者計10名の昭和62年の研究成果を中心とした研究発表が行われ, 午前, 午後ときわめて熱心な討論がくりひろげられた(昭和63年1月29日)また, 全班員の成果は成果報告書として印刷した.
