Our research project entitled "Investigation of Naturally Occurring Drug Materials in Indonesia-2" aims at revealing the naturally occurring drug materials, i.e. medicinal plants, in Indonesia and points towards the development of the academic exchange between Japan and Indonesia.In 1988, we surveyed in Province Nusa Tenggara Timur (Timor and Flores Islands), Indonesia and collected 148 species of medicinal plants together with their informations.In 1989, all specimens were identified at Herbarium Bogoriense, Bogor, Indonesia. The alcoholic extracts of these specimens were made and examined by means of several kinds of chromatographic technique and bioassays, at Osaka University. The analytical studies are in progress, and we have obtained some promising evidence that the chemical and biological studies of materials collected in our survey may lead us to find new bioactive substances.By two research surveys in 1985 and 1988 (total collections of Jamu materials 303 sp. and medicinal plant 376 sp. in two surveys), we have almost completed the survey of medicinal plants in Flores Island, Indonesia.
